Tubing vs. Piping
Many facilities depend on fluid delivery sent through piping systems. Unfortunately, cutting, welding and threading hard pipe is not a quick process. It is slow and labor intensive. A better alternative may be stainless steel tubing. Stainless steel tubing, instead of hard pipe, can greatly simplify installation and plant maintenance
As an example, the table below demonstrates the differences between a schedule 80 pipe assembly and a 1in. tube assembly.
Many hard piping systems contain hard 90-degree turns (elbows) which create pressure drop. By contrast, stainless steel tubing is bendable to precise radii.
Instead of 90-degree elbows, gradual sweeps are created, which minimize
pressure drop. With stainless steel tubing, technicians can be trained
to manage the bending and assembly.
Threaded pipe fittings are more likely to leak, especially in systems with vibration or thermal expansion and contraction. A combination of tube bending and automated orbital welding can greatly reduce the number of potential leak points.
For mechanical connections the Swagelok Tube Fitting is a solution that will not back off during thermal cycling or high vibrations. The fitting is able to resist vibration using the live-loaded action of the front and back ferrule. The colleting of the back ferrule also isolates, dampens and protects the stress riser in the tubing, preventing weakness in the wall.
